Keren Lurie, Grade 6 Teacher and Head of Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the King David Ariel School, South Africa, reflects on her experience of the 2025 Jewish Educators’ Seminar.

Inspiration, innovation, and connection defined every moment of my experience at the World ORT Jewish Educators’ Seminar in Barcelona, Spain. From the very first handshake to the final goodbyes, the seminar was a vibrant celebration of education, creativity, and the power of collaboration.

Coming from South Africa, it was an incredible privilege to join educators from all over the world, each bringing their unique perspectives, challenges, and triumphs to the table. Together, we explored how education can adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world. The diversity of thought and experiences enriched every conversation and project, creating an atmosphere in which creativity knew no bounds.

The seminar kicked off at Colegio Hatikva, where we were warmly welcomed and introduced to the team’s inspiring implementation of the Kurt Lewin Model. Touring the school and seeing its innovative approaches to education first-hand was both fascinating and motivating. The sense of community and purpose at Hatikva set the tone for the days to come.

Beyond the classroom, Barcelona’s rich history and culture became an integral part of our learning journey. We wandered through the awe-inspiring Casa Adret and immersed ourselves in the city’s Jewish heritage, learning about its deep historical roots.

Visits to the Cathedral’s archives and other architectural marvels left us in awe of the stories etched into every stone. Ending a day with a Sephardic Mediterranean concert was a magical way to reflect on the themes of resilience, identity, and creativity that tied our experience together.

The seminar didn’t just expand our cultural horizons – it pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in education. Sessions on using artificial intelligence in Jewish education and addressing antisemitism in the age of technology were both thought-provoking and forward-looking. We delved into strategic action planning, project management, and turning ideas into impactful initiatives. Each discussion equipped us with practical tools and fresh perspectives to bring back to our classrooms and communities.

Meeting Rabbi Samuel Garzón at the Comunidad Israelita De Barcelona and experiencing the beauty of its synagogue was another highlight, grounding our work in shared values and tradition. It was a reminder of the powerful connection we all share as educators, united by a common mission to inspire and uplift.

In just four days, we covered an extraordinary amount of ground. The energy and passion from every participant, the incredible impact of ORT, and the unwavering support from King David Schools in South Africa, made this experience truly unforgettable. I left the seminar energized, inspired, and ready to take what I’ve learned and transform it into action.

Thank you to ORT and King David South Africa for this incredible opportunity. The knowledge I’ve gained, the connections I’ve made, and the inspiration I’ve felt will undoubtedly shape my teaching journey. I can’t wait to continue collaborating, innovating, and making an impact. This seminar wasn’t just an event, it was a spark that will continue to light the way forward.
