8 September 2005 Some 500 people have attended ORT Argentinas annual Gala Dinner, raising more than $100,000 to provide scholarships for needy students. The evening at the Hilton Hotel, Buenos Aires, featured song and dance performances by local ORT students as well as examples of their technical expertise. ORT Argentina President Norma de Werthein told the guests of her debt to the staff and students who had turned the word ORT into a synonym for quality and excellence in scientific-technological education in Argentina. However, she added that ORT now meant far more than just the name of the organisations technical schools and colleges in Buenos Aires. Rather, it brings to mind a tradition of personal growth, an education for life that has been going on for 125 years. Today we are proud to say that ORT Argentina is, according to the highest authorities of World ORT here today, a bright gem in its crown, she said. Before the dinner, students representing the various study disciplines at the local ORT high schools displayed examples of their work, including a wheelchair that the user can operate by blowing and sucking air through a tube. ORT Argentina National Director Baruj Zaidenknop said the evening had been a complete success.
