ORT is an educational organization driven by Jewish values. However, we know that, for a variety of reasons, many Jewish communities are in decline – either in numbers, vibrancy, resources, or connection to Jewish life.

ORT schools are a centerpiece of their Jewish communities, especially in more remote regions and where assimilation is high. Serving a diverse Jewish population, they are the primary source of Jewish affiliation for many students and their families – providing a direct connection to our religion, history, and culture.

ORT offers formal and informal educational programs that engage students of all backgrounds (including non-Jewish students) and foster a cultural identity, encouraging Jewish life to thrive. These programs, along with the celebration of Shabbat and festivals, often draw in students’ families to appreciate Judaism’s values, teachings, and practice.

We have also developed two curricula to encourage the preservation and the strengthening of students’ attachment to their culture: Developing Thinking Skills Through Study of Jewish Texts (for Grade 9 and 10 students) and Rethinking the B’nei Mitzvah Experience (for pre-B’nei Mitzvah middle school-age students).

When my husband and I were choosing a school for our eldest son, the informal Jewish education offered by the school was a decisive factor. We wanted our son not only to receive a high-quality technological education, but also to be deeply immersed in the traditions and culture of our people.”

Irina, mother of two students at an ORT school in Ukraine.
